Sicily has always been considered the land of citrus fruits and in particular of lemons. There are two basic varieties of Sicilian lemons, the Messina Interdonato lemon and the Syracuse lemon. The first takes its name from Giovanni Interdonato, a Garibaldian colonel passionate citrus grower who carried out more than one hundred grafts to obtain this hybrid.
Its shape is elliptical and elongated, the rind is not very wrinkled and the size is quite high, between 80 and 350 gr. Sicilian lemons of the Interdonato variety are appreciable not only for their juice and peel, but can also be enjoyed as excellent desserts: covered with sugar and left to macerate overnight in the fridge, they take on a unique flavor!
The Syracuse lemon, on the other hand, known as “Femminello Syracusano”, is considered one of the most prized varieties of lemons in Italy for its organoleptic properties. Syracuse lemons are generally medium in size, very fragrant and 30% juicier than other lemons.
